In short

Live IPO GMP data comes from grey market traders -- primarily networks in Surat and Ahmedabad. It is not exchange data and varies by source. The most reliable way to track current IPO GMP is via aggregators that update daily by 8-9 PM IST.

  • GMP is not real-time -- it reflects trader quotes typically updated once daily
  • Check stoichq.in/ipo/gmp-today for current GMP for all active and upcoming IPOs
  • End-of-day GMP (after 8 PM IST) is more reliable than intraday quotes
  • Across sources: if GMP differs by more than 20%, the market is thin or diverged

If you have ever searched "IPO GMP today" and found 10 different numbers across 10 different websites, you are not alone. Grey market premium data is fragmented, informal, and often stale. This guide explains where the data actually comes from, how to find the most reliable current GMP numbers, and what "live" really means in the context of an unregulated market.

Where Does IPO GMP Data Come From?

IPO GMP data originates from grey market traders -- primarily networks concentrated in Surat, Ahmedabad, and a few other cities with historically active IPO financing and trading communities. These are informal broker networks that facilitate IPO share trading before listing, outside the exchange system.

These traders quote buy and sell prices for IPO shares and applications throughout the IPO subscription period and up to listing day. Prices are communicated through WhatsApp groups, phone calls, and increasingly through telegram channels. There is no central order book or exchange -- it is a dealer market with prices varying by trader and geography.

Aggregator websites (including stoicHQ) collect quotes from multiple grey market traders and display a consensus or representative price. The quality of this aggregation depends on how many traders the site has relationships with and how recently they updated their quotes.

What "Live" GMP Actually Means

GMP is not real-time in the way that NSE stock prices are real-time. There is no ticker feed. Here is what a typical update cycle looks like:

  • Morning (9 AM - 11 AM): Grey market opens. Initial quotes based on overnight developments, subscription data from previous day, and any news about the IPO company.
  • Midday: Prices stabilise unless there is significant new information (anchor investor announcement, subscription data update, broader market movement).
  • Evening (7 PM - 9 PM): End-of-day quotes reflect that day's subscription data and sentiment. Most aggregator websites update their GMP tables during this window.

What this means practically: if you check GMP at 2 PM, you are likely seeing a morning or previous-evening quote. The most reliable reading of the day is the post-8 PM update, which reflects full-day market activity and the latest subscription figures.

How to Find Current IPO GMP: The Practical Method

For active IPOs (currently open for subscription or within 7 days of listing):

  1. Use stoicHQ's GMP tracker at stoichq.in/ipo/gmp-today: Updated daily with all active and upcoming IPOs. Shows GMP in absolute and percentage terms, with trend direction.
  2. Check 2-3 sources: Compare the number across InvestorGain, IPO Watch, and stoicHQ. If they agree within ₹10-15, you have a reliable consensus. If they diverge by more than 20%, the market is thin or fragmented.
  3. Look for the update timestamp: Any GMP data older than 24 hours during an active subscription is potentially stale. During the final 48 hours before listing, look for same-day updates.
  4. Prefer end-of-day data: Check after 8 PM IST for the most representative daily quote.

GMP Data by IPO Stage

GMP behaves differently depending on where the IPO is in its lifecycle:

IPO StageGMP ReliabilityNotes
Pre-open (announced but not yet open)LowVery thin market, speculative quotes from early traders
Day 1-2 of subscriptionLow to moderateImproving as subscription data comes in
Day 3 of subscription (final day)ModerateMost subscription data visible, GMP more reflective of reality
Post-subscription, pre-listing (allotment week)HighMarket has all information; GMP is most reliable predictor here
Final 48 hours before listingHigh, but volatileShort covering and new short positions can cause swings

Why GMP Differs Across Websites

There are several reasons why you see different GMP numbers on different sites:

  • Different trader networks: Each aggregator has relationships with different grey market traders. A site with Surat-based traders may show different prices than one with Ahmedabad contacts.
  • Update frequency: One site may have updated 6 hours ago; another updated 30 minutes ago. The more recent update will reflect more current sentiment.
  • Quote type: Some sites show bid price (what buyers will pay), others show ask price (what sellers want), others show mid-price. These can differ by ₹10-20.
  • Thin market effect: For smaller IPOs with less grey market activity, individual large trades can move the price significantly between updates.

When two sites differ by more than 20% on the same IPO, the grey market is thin. Treat any GMP reading as low-reliability in this case.

IPOs to Track: Finding Upcoming IPOs with GMP

Beyond active IPOs, many investors want to monitor GMP for upcoming IPOs in the pipeline. The stoicHQ upcoming IPOs tracker at stoichq.in/ipo/upcoming-ipos-india shows:

  • SEBI-approved IPOs with expected open dates
  • GMP once grey market activity begins (typically 1-2 weeks before subscription opens for large IPOs)
  • Issue price range, lot size, and category subscription allocations

For most IPOs, reliable GMP data only becomes available once the price band is announced and the red herring prospectus (RHP) is filed. Before that, any GMP numbers are highly speculative.

A Note on Source Verification

Several WhatsApp forwards and Telegram channels circulate GMP numbers that are fabricated or significantly inflated. This happens particularly for SME IPOs where operators want to drive retail subscription. Before acting on any GMP number from a social media source, verify it independently on at least one established aggregator site.

Signs that a GMP number may be unreliable: it is significantly higher than what any website shows, it comes only from one source with no verification path, or it is for an SME IPO with very low issue size (under ₹50 crore).

The Right Mental Model for GMP Data

Think of GMP data the way you would think about a consumer sentiment survey -- not precise measurement, but directional signal. A GMP of ₹80 does not mean the stock will list at exactly ₹80 above issue price. It means the aggregate of grey market trader positions and sentiment points toward a strong listing. The direction and trend matter more than the exact number.
